Writing about my drawings and paintings is a labor that ultimately produces little I want to share. Perhaps this is because making visual art is, for me, a blessedly non-intellectual process. Happily, some of my favorite artists have said things about making art that resonate nicely with my process.

Paul Klee

“A line is a dot that went for a walk.”

“To achieve vital harmony in a picture it must be constructed out of parts in themselves incomplete, brought into harmony only at the last stroke.”

Vincent Van Gogh

“Exaggerate the essential, leave the obvious vague.”

Pablo Picasso

“If I paint a wild horse, you might not see the horse, but surely you will see the wildness!”

“If I don't have red, I use blue.”

“Every now and then one paints a picture that seems to have opened a door and serves as a stepping stone to other things.”

Alexander Calder

“I paint with shapes.”
