When I was in my early thirties, I discovered that my music and stories arose from the same source. I made the discovery while writing my novel Louie & Women, a multiple narrative featuring the voices of four women, one of them Eva, who was nine years old. Eva’s was the only voice I could not hear clearly. One day, having abandoned pen and paper, I sat at my piano thinking about Eva, and I began to play a delicate waltz; and Eva began to speak. So I played and played, and Eva told me her stories, and ever since then I have known that when a story or play or novel takes hold of me, there will be music and songs coming, too.
